Day 10 6/1

Today I was all prepared to go on a Hike at Bannerman’s Island. I wore pants to protect myself from the evils of poison ivy and deer ticks and shoes to conquer the terrain we were to face. So I was a little disappointed that it was more of a tour then a hike. I am sure I would have been fine in shorts and sandals. Despite this mishap I still enjoyed the tour of the Island.

Our day started exactly at 8:21, although it wasn’t surprise that someone (not going to say any names) was late. Once we arrived we waited to board the boat. Once on the boat we headed out for the island. At one point Krista was joking the boat was going to sink because of the beeping noise, luckily we didn’t sink. As we moved closer to the island we could see more and more of the Castle, and the shape it was in. he purchased the island because of his business in ammunition. He originally was in the city, and they feared if it blew up it would take half the city with it. So I found it a little Ironic that the Warehouse ended blowing up two years after the death of Bannerman. Luckily no one was killed in the blast, however three were injured including Mrs. Bannerman.
During the tour I noticed a lot of ball shaped objects surrounding the building and the area. We were only to be told later that Bannerman had a fascination with cannon balls that is pretty cool. He even would fire cannons at passing boats to scare the ship caption. I found that hilarious, because if I had my own private island that sounds like something I would enjoy doing. Although his fun came to an end when a cannon misfired and destroyed a farm. Feeling guilty Bannerman sent his men to build a newer bigger farm. Sadly that put an end to his cannon ball fun. Just seeing that outside you could only imagine how beautiful the Castle and the other buildings looked. I wish I had the chance the see the castle in its glory days cause that would have been a sight to see.  However the downfall began in1969 after the building caught fire, causing the roofs and the floors to collapse. Two years ago because of the destruction it faced. Much of the building collapsed, only leaving part of it standing. Luckily they were able to stabilize the building to prevent further collapsing.

After the tour we got on the boat and headed back. We ate lunch and were told to meet up again at the van at2:53 (what is it with these wired times). While waiting for the professors some of us had a little fun with a shopping cart. After we ate lunch we headed back to Sage, while driving over a curve in the process. On the way back to Sage I became a head rest for the sleeping Krista. Lucky for her I did not mind since I am used to being a headrest after many years of sitting in between my older sister and young brother on the long car rides we took, and my purpose was to be their headrests (lucky me).
