Day 17 6/10

Today I woke to weird call from my dad, he was wondering if I knew where my suspenders were (my brother needed them for a class). I told him they were my friends and I don’t have any. So we hung up, he defiantly should know better than to call me and wake me. Like any normal day we all met up and did some blogs. We went on a hike before heading to the Beacon Institute. On this hike we stopped at Denning’s Point and Fish Kill Creek. As we walked we crossed over a bridge, under it was one of the main train tracks. As we stood there and talked a train went under us, it was pretty cool. While we stood there Toby talked about the environment and how the tracks affect them. Dikes effect the flow of the stream and the community. Anytime you changed the environment it will affect the ecosystem. This brings up a controversial topic, are Marshes/wetlands a good thing. I know this is Toby’s FAVORITE quote “Marshes are the kidneys of the landscape”. The function of the Kidney is to clean and filter fluids in the body, mostly blood. This is why Marshes are like Kidneys, the function of Marshes is to pretty much clean the water.

We then continued along on the trail. As we walked we passed an old Brick Factory. There I found out Brick Manufacturing was biggest in New York, especially the Hudson Valley area. This is because many building in NYC were built in factories likes the one we saw. This is how the brick manufactures thrived. We stopped at fish kill creak, and discussed how water chestnuts are the spawn of Satan. They are on invasive species, brought over by so dumbass from Europe and put them in his pond. After that we headed over to Denning’s Point and talked about the environment. Toby even gave us a hand going down a steep incline.

While we were walking back, we stopped at the Beacon Institute to check out their toilets. At first I was a little scared to check out the toilet because I figured it would be something nasty or something like that. However I had to pee so I didn’t care what the toilet was I was using it. I was shocked to see the toilet, I thought it was pretty cool. The toilet used foam instead of water. The toilet also saves around 60000 litters of water each year. As in the words of Krista “Why are we not funding this”? Something that stuck out before we saw the toilets was the parking lot. The first thing I noticed they let grass grow in where people are supposed to park. Katie then pointed out that the handicapped spot did not have any grass there. After our tour we returned to the van.

For lunch we all went to a place called Pizza & Stuff. I was hungry so I was definitely happy with pizza (especially since it’s my favorite food). On the TV it was showing one of the Superman Movies, I think it was Superman Returns but I could be wrong. After Lunch we headed out to the walkway. The walkway over the Hudson was fun, but tiring. Once we walked down we waited for the group. Luckily there was a vending machine with water because I really needed it. On the walk back I walked with Kassiana, I enjoyed walking back and talking with her. We mostly talked about soccer and how much we missed it.

After the walkway over the Hudson we returned to Mount Saint Mary (which was a two hour drive). After an hour we met up again to order dinner and watch the Eleanor Roosevelt Movie. Since we didn’t finish the movie I will not comment on it till I know the full story. In Precious’s and Krista’s room (and mine) when Precious said we should go on an adventure. So we went to her car and drove around Newburgh. Walking to her car Michael was outside he asked us were we were going and we said on an adventure. Apparently he and Andor were going on an adventure of their own. When we were going to drive by, Andor waved us down. I figured we were going to get a curfew but no he just needed to take a picture. This put an end to the long day.
