It is hard to
believe that we are almost done with our third week. Not counting Wiawka or any
of our hikes, today was probably my favorite day. Most days we are touring a
museum, a home, a historical site or something along those lines. As much as I
enjoy touring places such as that (well most of them), I really enjoyed the
trip to Peebles Island Art Restoration. Today we got the chance to go behind
the scenes and see the process it takes to get the artifacts we see in museums
in the state they are in. In the museums we don’t realize how much effort is
put in to allowing us to be able to see the artifacts in restored form. We saw
a wide range of artifacts, they could restore painting, furniture, paper,
frames and much more. It was interesting to actually see and hear the processes
needed to restore what we see in museums. After only listening to each person
for about 15 minutes, you could see each of them were very passionate about
what they do. There was one picture in the process of restoration that belong
to Fredrick Church. It was believed to be his first large scale painting. I
thought it was awesome that we saw a picture of Fredrick Church, after visiting
his house. There was also a copy of a painting that showed before and after
restoration. Looking at the ‘After Restoration’ picture there was hardly any
sign of damage.

After we finished
we broke for lunch. I always enjoy our lunch time chats, we all sat together
and just talked. After lunch we had some time, so we went over to a lock of
Troy. I have taken a field trip to the lock near where I live, so I already
know how the locks of the Erie Canal work. There is so much history behind the Erie Canal. In its day it was the main transportation from east to west. Places along the Erie Canal thrived on this and were built near locks and alongside the Canal. In the lock there was a fish belly side up, but he was fine he was just tanning or just taking a nap. Next we returned to Troy. I finished
reading Quinn’s Book before book club
at 5.
