Day 13 6/04

Today we started off the day a little different, instead of going so where we had a class day. I actually enjoyed the class day and wished we had more days like this. After being on the go so much it is nice to just sit and learn. I also enjoyed being able to discuss everything with my fellow classmates and Toby. That may be because my favorite part about my English and Government class was when we were debating a topic. The discussion of today was biodiversity, and whether it is ok to cause an animal/plant to go extinct for our own needs. Even now I am still not sure where I stand on the issue. While it is like survival of the fittest the dominant species wins over the less dominant species but on the other hand is it fair that we decide if this species lives or dies just to get what we want. Also every species/ecosystem is intertwined, if we destroy one it will cause a butterfly affect and possibly destroy other species. So the question is, is it worth it? Do we have the ability to make that choice? Or is it just simple survival of the fittest?

I am a hands on kind of person, I always enjoyed the days in my AP Bio when we used the microscope or in Chem when we would do awesome experiments. So I was excited to analyze what we collected from Peebles Island (wow that seems like forever ago). I collected goose poop, muck, and a plant. My microscope partner Krista collected a caterpillar muck and green stuff. The caterpillar was surprisingly alive.  In the muck and green stuff you could actually see little organisms moving around, which was fascinating. In the goose poop you could actually see what the goose had ate.  Under the microscope the caterpillar looked cool, although he wouldn’t sit still long enough for us to get a good look (he was probably mad at us for freezing him for like two weeks). After analyzing what we collected we cleaned up the mess we made so we could move on to our next topic.

The next topic of discussion was water bottles! Personally I don’t tend to care where my water comes from as long as it is clean and safe to drink. Although if I were to choose, I probably would choose water bottles just because they are more convenient (but I always recycle). The woman in the video made some valid points but they were based on her own biased opinion. People see drink water bottles in public just as bad as a pregnant woman smoking, yeah ok like I’m going to believe that. Although tap may be clean the pipes they come from may not be necessarily as clean, I think that’s why people are a little hesitant to drink from the tap.

After doing a carbon footprint and deciding who had what section for our rebuilding troy topic we broke for lunch. I always enjoy lunch (not just because I love food) but I enjoy our lunch discussions. After eating I took this time to read a little bit before we headed out to our next spot.

I have walked by the Rensselaer County Historical Society many times and never took the time to realize what the building actually was. Once inside we sat at tables and discussed how to read and think about artifacts. We then went over to the house and walked around, seeing if we could find anything that we had a question about. I really like the wallpaper it had such a variety to it. Although the house wasn’t that great. The tour guide was friendly, however she said that most of it wasn’t original artifacts from the home. It had many thing that they assumed would have been in a home. Although not that it wasn’t pretty it was just a little boring. After our tour we returned to our tables so we could pick our artifact, I choose a homemade Ice cream maker. Hopefully while I do my research I can test some ice cream.
